Speed. Something that can crush you down and keep you still or can free you. The most incredible element in anything. The wind rushing in your face, eyes stinging, and the simple controlling power it has over you. Rushing down a mountain or falling to earth, or watching the ocean move under you as you catch a wave. Speed is one of the things that defines extreme. How uncontrollable something is, how much power it has over you, and how much you crave it. I feel that the speed of things can free you. When I’m going down a mountain or catch a wave, I know that I’m not in control, and that the slightest error could send me flying, tumbling, or possibly even kill me. Something big is that to have even the slightest control of speed, of this overwhelming power, you need to understand that you can’t fight it, that you have no control of it. You have to let it move, all you do is guide it. You can’t expect to conquer such a thing, but you can attempt to use it.
If you were to ask me, I would tell you that there are different types of speed depending on what you are doing, and the element in which you are working in. There are always different things that control you. For something like surfing, you have to understand that you aren’t controlling the waves but the other way around. I believe that the best way to become good at this kind of thing is to almost have a tight relationship with the ocean. It demands respect, and when you really know how to give it that respect that it deserves, is when it gives you a favor in return.
Snowboarding is the same concept, but in a different element. You turn, you weave, and you carve, but if you try to push the board too far, and try to control the element of speed in which you are working in, you will most definitely be thrown. Once again, you need a respect for the mountain. I have noticed that this respect and this understanding simply comes to you, it’s not something you can just get right away.
The main thing you need to understand, is that the reason we use a board, or skiis, or a surf board or a parachute, is because you don’t ride, or control that craft, instead that craft controls you and you simply guide it, to become good at things like these, you need to gain this respect for the elements only you yourself can gain.
